How the site works…
As with any finance/money based website. Content will forever change. News will break, trends become apparent and structure can be wonky at the best of times. While that can be challenging to manage, we want to embrace that challenge while serving our readers consistently.
At the moment, Pounds & Pennies serves as a passion project from self proclaimed “money nerd” Martyn Rance. I have no idea why I referred to myself in the third person but we’ll run with it. That means the site has one contributor, one editor, one researcher and one website developer wrapped up in one person (me). I aim to keep it this way for as long as possible. I bet a lot of you reading can relate to having the urge to OWN something of your own, work on it in your free time and watch it grow. That’s exactly what is going on here.
Until a (much) later date, there isn’t any expectation of this site generating any revenue. It would be silly to assume that I haven’t sat back and thought about it though (I obviously have). If it does change from passion project to actual project, then that’s cool, but the purpose of this platform will forever remain the same. To break down barriers regarding financial literacy, ensuring that everyone has access to the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. If that comes with some ad revenue or affiliate income later down the line, then that’s cool. But again, it’s a passion project.
A brief intro of Martyn…
Wow, writing about yourself… how humble.
I share the sentiment myself, trust me.
While writing an intro about yourself can be considered corny. I think it’s warranted to give readers some context regarding who is behind the content and the direction of the platform.
Let’s make it quick. 26 years old (older Gen Z), grew up in a working class household that split into a lower class single mother household in my late teens. Hold a day job in marketing within the financial service industry. Looking to be a first-time buyer this year. Dropped out of university in 2020. No major writing, PR or Journalism experience outside what is required in my day job. Massive Red Devils fan.
I think the last detail is enough to scare some away.
Jokes aside. You can understand how some details of my life can be linked to why I started this website. Working class, drop out… doesn’t exactly scream financial affluence. But you then see working in the financial services industry, being a first time buyer and ask what happened between those stages?
The middle is what inspired me to start this project. All the time I spent on other platforms teaching myself about budgeting, investing, saving and how politics and economics affect me personally. It was a long process. Yes I learnt, but there was so much fluff involved that sometimes I would be sent off course. Pounds & Pennies is what 20 year old Martyn needed to make financial literacy simpler, more distilled and less complicated.
